Historical Background

The Kamakhya Temple Complex dates back to ancient times and is considered one of the oldest and holiest centers of tantric shakta worship. The Complex has been a seat of Mahavidya sadhana for centuries and is especially known for honoring The Ten Fierce Forms Of The Divine Mother.

The Maa DhumaVati Temple is one of the lesser-known Shrines within the Complex, tucked away from the main path, in alignment with Her Nature As The Goddess of silence, void, and renunciation. Her worship is generally kept secret and is performed by advanced tantric practitioners, particularly during Amavasya and Gupt Navaratri.

This Temple does not house a traditional Murti. Instead, Maa Dhumavati is worshipped in the form of a Yantra (sacred geometric diagram), as is common in Her Temples due to Her formless, unmanifested essence.

She Is The Crone Form Of The Divine Mother—widowed, smoky, unadorned—symbolizing wisdom, detachment, and liberation from illusion.
